Starting a new diet is difficult. We’ve all been through the same excuses. Whether it’s wanting to wait until after the holidays, a birthday, or some other arbitrary point in time, we are good at delaying a diet. Achieving a healthy diet is not as challenging as you may think, though. Here’s a list of helpful tips so that you can change your dining habits.

Stop Eating Late At Night

No good comes from late night eating, even if you choose healthy foods. Eating after 8 p.m. is considered a huge no-no, because your body does not have the time to burn off the calories. Eating later in the evening is one of the fastest ways to gain weight and spoil an otherwise healthy diet.

Eat A Wide Variety Of Foods

Your body requires a vast range of nutrients to perform at its best, so don’t get bogged down with one particular food group. Be sure to get plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Lose The Sugar And Salt

Avoiding foods with added sugars helps when trying to achieve a healthy diet, so make sure you are not consuming them. The higher the salt content a product has, the less healthy it is for you. While sugar and salt are key ingredients in many favorite foods such as french fries and ice cream, no healthy diet happens without sacrifice.

Cut Down On Alcohol

Alcohol is the hidden killer of healthy diets. A person can make all the right choices while eating, but deciding to consume a six pack or a bottle of wine will undo all of it. Men are able to have 2 drinks per day with few ill effects, while 1 drink is the suggested amount for women.

Eat A Balanced Breakfast

Contrary to the belief of many, skipping breakfast will not help you to lose weight or establish a healthy diet. Not only does eating breakfast provide you with the energy you need to carry you through the morning, but your body metabolizes the food much more easily.

Drink More Water

The signal that the body sends to your brain indicating hunger is actually quite similar to the signal your body sends to signal thirst. When in doubt, have a glass of water instead of a snack. A person can never have too much water, although doctors recommend eight glasses per day.

Give Yourself An Occasional Treat

This does not mean you should scarf down a whole pizza or a double cheeseburger. But, letting yourself have an occasional favorite, such as a cookie or a slice of pizza, keeps you from going on a junk food binge down the line. With the right combination of diet and exercise, your metabolism will increase, allowing you to burn these foods more easily than you did before.
